Konso
The
region and people of Konso can be found in South of
Ethiopia, within the Southern Nations, Nationalities
and Peoples’ Regional State (SNNPRS). The district
has numerous natural and local outstanding attractions
which continue to bring visitors to our lands from
all over the world.
Konso is primarily a highland area offering strong
walls and towering views over the naturally moulded
African Rift Valley. The surrounding mountains have
hosted the crops and farms of our people for over
500 years. We have been cultivating its surface using
the traditional stone terracing scaling technique,
which until this day serves the cuisines and habits
of our community.
Location:
The
district is strategically located at a meeting point
on the routes to southwest Ethiopia and the Kenyan
boarder. It is a key point on Ethiopia's southern
tourist circuit and serves as a gateway to South Omo.
Konso Special Woreda covers an area of 2354km2.
This Woreda
is bordered by Derashe, Amaro, Burji Special Woreda,
Oromia State and South Omo. Karat, the capital of
Konso Special Woreda , is located about 595km south
of Addis Ababa, capital of the country, and can be
reached through Debrezeit- Mojo- Shashemene –
Arbaminch road. It is also located 100km west of Yabello
which is found on the main Hawassa – Moyale
international road. Karat is a small lively town with
the following services: telephone line, internet,
sub post office, fuel station, local hotels with self
contained on suite rooms, and private & government
health centers. Moreover, two tourist standard lodges
and three community based simple accommodation centre
with camping ground are under construction.

| The
most distinctive feature of Konso is the appealing
architecture of Konso villages. The Konso traditionally
live in populated settlements usually situated on
the top of a hill and enclosed by stone walls. There
are about 32 villages encircled by tall stone walls,
and each practicing a different culture.
Villagers will gather at the Mora, a public gathering
spot where the pafta,
a large hut, and Olahitas,
the central location for cultural ceremonies. In these
areas they would perform rituals, dances, food preparations,
and weaving; all of the wonderful aspects of Konso
heritage.
A great aspect of our communities’ whereabouts
is the vivid and beautiful natural setting in the
green south plains of Ethiopia. The natural landscapes,
terraces, wooden statues, also known as Waka , and
the famous naturally shaped mud towers which is named
by locals as Konso New York.
